Dear Mr. Lapp:
I am writing to apply for the 2016 summer internship position in the RM/OR group at American Airlines. I heard about this job opportunity from Ms. Wanda Dobberstein: Undergraduate Academic Advisor in the department of Industrial and Operations Engineering (IOE) at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. This exciting opportunity appears to be a wonderful fit with my professional experience, educational background and career goals.
I come from a solid technical background with strong interest in OR applications to the real world problems. My program of study is structured to give me balanced view of both theoretical and applied aspects of various quantitative techniques such as linear programming, convex optimization, stochastic modeling, machine learning and data mining. During the Fall 2015 semester, I had worked on developing a Markovian model to determine the optimal policy for the batting team in a game of Cricket.
Prior to Michigan, I was a Supplier Quality Engineer at Robert Bosch India Ltd. Where I demonstrated exceptional leadership, problem solving aptitude and initiative to achieve an 83% increase in assembly line productivity by solving a longstanding quality issue. Unlike other candidates, I have a proven track record of delivering results as I led a cross functional team of 7 members to reduce the number of assembly line rejections from 120 to 20 defective parts per month. My background in generating innovative ideas and strategies has provided me with a deeper understanding of multifaceted problems that companies encounter in their daily operations. Moreover, because of my work experiences, I fully understand how important it is to have great interpersonal skills in today’s multi-disciplinary business environment
