Sample cover letter for Internship position at Senator Elizabeth Warren

POSITION:

Internship

March 1, 2016

Dear Hiring Committee:

I am a graduate of Loyola University and write to express my interest in an internship with Senator Elizabeth Warren’s office. With my prior academic and work experiences, I believe I can bring strong work ethic, oral and written communication, and interpersonal skills to work in Senator Warren’s office.

In Fall 2015, I served as a White House intern in the Office of Presidential Correspondence, where it was my duty to the American people to communicate with them on behalf of the President. I read the President’s mail frequently and if I was not sorting and data entering pertinent constituent information, then I was quality checking the work of others to ensure a speedy response from the President. To interact with them accurately, I had to research. If there was missing information or I was unsure about information provided, then I researched to find the answer through various portals. To heighten my research skills, I depended on my teammates who as a result taught me new ways to find the piece of information I am looking for; I also used new research tools to uncover the information to respond to constituents. Given that interns at Senator Warren’s office will be tasked with conducing research and communicating with constituents, I believe my prior experience at the White House will make me an asset in Senator Warren’s Office.

In Summer 2015, I served as an intern at Liberty and Access, where I performed various administrative tasks to push the recently-started nonprofit organization forward. It was my responsibility to create an agenda. From this, I learned a new approach to creating projects. I took notes for our executive board member meetings and a one-on-one meeting with the President and Founder of our organization with another organization’s high up member. I sent customized and professional emails to and called various organizations’ high up officials to enhance our partnerships. I took information provided and put it in an Excel sheet so that duties for each member of our team would be clear. These skills will help me, if I get an internship at Senator Warren’s office.

I would welcome an opportunity to meet and further discuss my background and interest in working in Senator Elizabeth Warren’s office. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Josh Washington
