With the rise in energy costs, heating and cooling entire buildings is starting to make less and less sense. What if, instead, each person could have their own efficient, low-cost personal comfort solution that could make you feel less hot or cold, controlled to meet your individual needs? Ideally, each individual would have an entirely self-contained solution that helped them feel warmer or cooler and didn't interfere with anyone else's personal comfort.

For examples of the types of solutions, check out these links:

Deliverables

What creative solutions are best to meet the technical challenges of creating a personal comfort solution? Address each of the following points in your answer:

  1. Describe the technology and how the personal comfort device will interact with the human body. How is it worn? Does the individual turn it on, does it sense a need and respond? If so, how?
  2. How does this solution affect the psyche of the individual? Does it change their actual body temperature, or make their perceived temperature change?\
  3. Will others in the environment that surround the user be affected? Does it create noise or distractions?
  4. Is power required? If so, how will it be supplied?
  5. Provide an illustration of your idea to help us visualize your solution.

CRITERIA: We are not looking for a personal air conditioner or HVAC unit. Think outside the box!
