Substations are an integral part of delivering electricity to you. Substation site location is important, as each substation must be centrally located in the distribution area to be served. To prevent injury and vandalism, substations must be heavily secured. Often, these needs mean that substations are located in the neighborhoods where electricity is used. That can be a contentious issue, as people tend to believe electrical substations are unsightly and dangerous, and may negatively affect property values.

We want your help with changing these negative perceptions of substations. These efforts have shown promise, and we want you to take it to the next level. From changing the substation itself to reversing the stigma associated with substations located near homes, we want your designs and ideas for making electrical substations a fit in America's communities.

Deliverables

Show us your ideas for the electrical substation that is a perfect fit in the neighborhood of tomorrow. Specifically, include the following in your response:

  1. Submit a plan for an electrical substation that is a welcomed part of a residential neighborhood. Think about how the substation can add value for residents beyond its ability to deliver electricity (educational or leisurely benefits, etc.). Explain your design choices in detail and why you think your design will be more welcoming than the standard substation.
  2. Explain in detail how this substation design would add value to the surrounding neighborhood. Give us examples of how similar features have improved and enlivened neighborhoods in real life situations.
  3. Include an artistic rendering of your substation design.

The best submissions will not only explain their substation idea, but will include visual aids, real world examples, and clear, imaginative designs.
