The bathroom, along with the kitchen, often gets the most use of any room in a residential setting. Bathroom fixtures like the faucet, shower, and toilet are essential to our everyday routine. In fact, research done in the UK estimates that we spend 1.5 years in the bathroom throughout our lifetime (source).

Though minor improvements have been made in these areas over the years, very little technology has been implemented to dramatically change our experience using these fixtures. We’d like your help developing the bathroom fixtures of the future.

Deliverables

Consider the technologies, data, consumer behaviors, and environmental issues that might exist in 2025. Then submit the following:

Faucet

a) What is the biggest consumer pain point using the bathroom faucet?

b) What is a technology based feature that could address this pain? How would it work?

Shower

a) What is the biggest consumer pain point using a shower?

b) What is a technology based feature that could address this pain? How would it work?

Toilet

a) What is the biggest consumer pain point using the toilet?

b) What is a technology based feature that could address this pain? How would it work?

Finally, select either your Faucet or Shower concept and add:

c) A deeper explanation of the product or technology. Why do consumers need this?

d) Sketches, mockups, diagrams, or images of similar technologies that capture how the product might look and function.

Criteria

Top concepts will be technology-driven solutions that address a specific user need. Avoid simple improvements like adding soap to a showerhead. We’re looking for technology (hardware, software, analytics, etc) that improves the user experience.

Submissions will be graded on the following criteria:
