For many futurists, the next wave in consumer trends is obvious: wearable tech devices, from trackers and watches to eyewear and devices not yet imagined. But at the present moment, such devices are limited because they aren’t truly standalone devices. Instead, they must be digitally tethered to mobile phones, unable to connect directly to 4G LTE networks for voice and data without a phone, which is not always convenient, like when exercising or doing something that may get a phone dirty or wet.

Deliverables

What new uses and experiences can you imagine that would be made possible within the next three years if wearable tech didn’t need to be tethered to smartphones? Your idea can focus on existing devices, such as those listed above, or even on wearable tech that isn’t available yet. Successful solutions will include the following:

1. A description of your proposed wearable technology device. What is it made of? How is it worn?

2. An explanation of the device’s technology and potential uses. How exactly is it used? How does it fit the user’s lifestyle? What new experiences are available now that wearable tech is untethered?

3. A diagram of how the device will look, attached as a PDF, JPEG, or other common image file.

We’re looking for breakthrough and innovative ideas not already talked about, so don’t hesitate to think outside the box!
