Next Challenge: What is your idea for a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to mineral oil? |
For over 100 years, Sonoco has produced a diverse range of converted products and packaging. This particular challenge is focused on developing new products and packaging using Uncoated Recycled Paperboard (URB).
URB is made from 100% recycled material and is 100% recyclable. Sonoco's URB is used in many converted product applications such as floor liner, tissue cores, corrugated boxes, concrete forming tubes, notebook pads, and HVAC filter frames. URB can also be used in packaging as an alternative to materials such as plastic, glass, metal and other non-paper substrates. An example of this would be composite cans that are made out of URB for potato chip packaging.
Sonoco is seeking new markets and products for our paperboard. Our challenge is simple: In what ways can our paperboard be used that doesn't exist today. Please keep in mind that Sonoco is interested in ideas where our rolls of paper can be converted into a new product not currently made out of paper. Also try not to limit your ideas to items made out of corrugated board (such as what moving boxes are made out of) as this is an established market.

We want your ideas for large scale applications (think in millions of units and revenue) of this paper product. Answer the following questions in detail:
- What is your idea for a new converted product (non-packaging)?
• Who is the target customer?
• What is the target market?
• Why would the market demand this product? - What current packaging product could benefit from a switch to paperboard packaging?
• Why would consumers care? What is the benefit to them?
• Why would Consumer Packaged Goods companies (CPG's) care? What is the benefit to them?
• Why would this be a success in relation to the current packaging format?
