TAILORED RESPONSE LETTER – this is what you would send out in line with a specific job advertisement you have seen. You must endeavour to fulfil all of the required criteria in terms of skills, knowledge and experience.

Dear Sir/Madam, (If you are asked to send your cover letter to a specific person, you must name them here and then finish your letter ‘yours sincerely’ or keep it at ‘yours faithfully’ if you don’t know the name of the person you have to contact)

JOB VACANCY (and reference number) – The majority of job advertisements will have this information on it at the top – you must accurately copy this to your cover letter or email so the recipient knows immediately which position your letter is in response to.

It’s then beneficial if you highlight the areas within your current role, or indeed your previous career experience, that marries with the personal specification or job description for the role you are applying for.

You can also include any education and professional development that you feel has helped you develop into an excellent candidate for the role.

Transferable skills can be listed, such as leadership (if applying for a team leader’s position), customer service skills (if applying for a customer-centric role, and so on)
