POSITION:

Summer Intern

Dear Ellen,

My name is X currently an Intern at X supporting the Research team. I am interested in applying for an Analyst role at your firm. X is a private equity advisor and asset manager, and oversees US$70 billion in commitments and US$12 billion in AUM. Since my graduation from XX in May 2015, I have been at X , where I’ve worked to learn and improve my financial research skills and analytical ability, and have developed the beginnings of an investing outlook which I believe can be an asset to your firm.

My day-to-day responsibilities include meeting fund managers, producing preliminary evaluation documents, and ultimately delivering a 50-70pg client-facing investment memo. Routinely, I will perform various fund-level track record analysis, just one of which is to use benchmarking tools provided by PrivateIQ. However, I make special effort to get involved with co-invest projects, where I have evaluated a company’s projected attractiveness, based on pitchbooks, CIMs, and financial models provided by the GP. Each week, I synthesize all the major points of every active co-invest deal and publish an update memo for the pipeline. In this capacity, I’ve been exposed to the gamut of deal strategies (i.e. technology, software, and cable) in a diverse set of industries and in various geographies, including North and South America, Asia, UK, and Europe. Through my experience supporting the research team, I developed a strong understanding of financial models, and have on numerous occasions tested and applied sensitivity analysis to assumptions modeled in the existing LBO model.

Before I transferred to Columbia in 2013, I worked as an Asst. Operations Manager at Prestige Corp., a laundry service provider in New York. An LA based firm invested US$25 million in 2012 and gave me my first exposure to the operational aspects of a company. At Prestige, I worked with senior management to increase performance metrics of 15 Drivers. To do so I utilized a number of data points like daily delivery logs, production demand, and traffic conditions to design an efficient operations process. Ultimately, I would present an employee shift schedule that reduced costly excess overtime hours in the Manhattan plant.

An Analyst role at XX . would be a valuable opportunity to develop concrete financial modeling skill while giving me broad exposure and experience with various industries and geographies. To this role, I would bring the research and financial skills developed with XX and an ability to analytically and creatively produce operational ideas and solutions, from XX. I believe that these skills as well as my strong willingness to learn can be a value for your team. Further, I believe that my values to hard work and integrity under adversity – a trait developed at the XX – makes me a good cultural fit for your firm. Thank you for your time and consideration. Please let me know if I can provide more information. I look forward to hearing back from you.

Best,
