Sample cover letter for Internship position at CNN News

POSITION:

Program Development Intern

I’m interested in applying for the Summer 2014 Production Services Internship. I’m currently a student (junior) at the XXX, majoring in Radio, Television, and Film with a minor in Management. My ultimate goal is to be a television producer and I believe this internship would be a great start towards reaching that goal because news environments are very fast-paced and require quick decision-making and careful planning.

I think I would be a perfect fit for this internship because I not only have a passion for the news and television, but I’ve also had experience in news studios and film productions. Though most of my experience comes from short film productions, I know I can easily translate what I’ve learned on film sets to a professional news studio. My main job on film sets has been as a producer, so I have extensive experience in planning, budgeting, multi-tasking, and hyper-communicating. My experience in news studios has mostly been as a camera operator, so I know what it’s like to work in a fast-paced news environment and how crucial it is to be meticulous when working on a live show. I’m also currently working as an assistant editor for the XXX Evening News so I will have a bit of experience with editing by the end of this semester.

I consider CNN to be a highly prestigious news program that has paved the way for other news programs since it was the first to provide 24-hour news coverage. I’ve grown up watching CNN because it’s the only news that my parents ever watch and it’s constantly on the TV in the living room. My mom always stressed to me the importance of watching the news, so it’s a habit that I’ve carried with me to college.

I obviously don’t live in New York so it’d be difficult to do an in-person interview, but I’d be willing to do a Skype interview or a phone interview. I know this internship does not provide housing, but I have family in New York that I could definitely stay with if I get this internship. Thank you so much for your attention, and I hope to hear from you soon!

Sincerely,

XXX
