Sample cover letter for Internship position at Center for International Policy

POSITION:

Security Assistance Monitoring Intern

GOT THE JOB? Yes

Dear Internship Coordinator,

I am writing this letter in response to a posting on careers.gmu.edu for the summer Africa Transparency & Accountability Intern position. I am an undergraduate International student in the Criminology, Law and Society department at George Mason University, minoring in Psychology. Coming from the Democratic Republic of Congo, and seeing what my country has been through, I have always been interested in human rights and security issues. After researching your organization I was intrigued by the vast arrays of programs that you facilitate in order to promote accountability, transparency and international cooperation.

My coursework has been focused on human rights issues, genocide and war crimes, law and society, national security and international policy. My research in these various courses have allowed me to be familiar with the pressing global issues, national security, peace building and International development. I aspire to be a part of an organization that allows me to influence my generation by providing assistance to those that fight for justice, integrity and respect for human rights. I believe that through an internship position with your organization, I will be well on my way in accomplishing that goal.

Having lived in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe, Belgium and now living in the United States, I have been exposed to various styles of government, economic and security systems. I have come to see how conflict can be the root of poverty and political instability. I believe that a lack of security prevents a nation from attaining economic and social development and gives way to corruption and violence. I have observed the remarkable work your organization has done, through the Just The Facts database, in addressing security issues related to Latin America. I am looking forward to seeing this research and oversight expanded to the African continent.

I am ambitious, hardworking, detail oriented and always eager to learn. I have seen what my continent has been through and I know for certain that addressing security issues will be a foundation in rebuilding our society. I am passionate about the work that your organization is willing to put forth in order to promote human rights, demilitarization and peace. I have the desire and drive to make a difference in your organization. I am well aware that this internship is unpaid but I am available to work full time 10am- 6pm, 5 days a week from May 13, 2014 to August 8, 2014. I welcome the opportunity to interview with you to further discuss my qualifications.

Sincerely,
