Sample cover letter for Internship position at Congressional office

POSITION:

Intern

GOT THE JOB? Yes

Dear _________:

I am a sophomore accounting major at _____ University. I am interested in the summer congressional internship with Congressman ________ at the Washington D.C. office, which I learned of through my friend _________. As a college student I believe it is vital that young adults value their civic duty, and I am eager to become more engaged so I can in turn excite and inform my peers. I believe my strong work ethic, relationship skills, and dedication to the community will enable me to be an asset to Congressman _______ Washington office.

This past January I had the opportunity to intern at _______ Public Relations in Nashville. There I gained an appreciation of the importance of writing, as well as experience in a professional atmosphere. I completed written assignments for clients and through the editing process worked to improve my abilities. I developed client communication skills while planning an event for Vanderbilt Law School, working closely with the event coordinator. I also learned more about group dynamics through project planning and focus groups for college age consumers.

During my time at _______, I have taken two classes with a strong focus in government policy: Intro to Social Work and Latin American Studies in the US. These classes have helped me gain a deeper understanding of issues facing a number of disadvantaged groups in the United States. Though my work with the extracurricular club, Circle K International, I have deepened my commitment to community service in the town of _________. I am excited to say that I recently received the position of Treasurer on the executive board of this organization, which will allow me to make impactful change to help the club’s retention rates.

With my skills and experiences, I believe I can be a valuable addition as an intern in Rep. _______ congressional office. I look forward to hearing from you, and discussing more of my experiences, and work at _______ that have prepared me for this internship. Thank you for your consideration.

Best regards,
