Sample cover letter for Internship position at Congresswoman

POSITION:

Congressional Staffer

Dear Congresswoman [REDACTED]:

I am a first-generation student at the University of [REDACTED] and I would like to be considered for a summer internship position with your DC office. As a third year Economics and Political Science double major I have considerable writing and research experience as well as a strong interest in public policy and the legislative process. I admire the work of the men and women in Congress and would like to assist them in making our nation a better place. It would be an honor to work in your office and I strongly believe that my education and previous experience qualify me for the position.

I am confident I would be an asset as an intern in your office. I have developed excellent research, writing, organizational, and multi-tasking skills during my three years at the University of [REDACTED]. In addition to the many papers I have written for my classes, I have also worked as the Assistant Director of Feedback and the Assistant Director of Research for [STUDENT GOVERNMENT SPEAKER'S BUREAU]. I’ve researched potential speakers, mining attendance data from their past events, and written summaries of the feedback data from post-event surveys for executive board members. My writing skills would be beneficial in writing briefings, research summaries, and correspondence if I am offered an internship in your office.

In addition to my research and writing skills, I also have experience as a leader and team member. I was selected as one of the top 100 sophomores in the [REDACTED] College of Business Administration from a highly competitive pool of student leaders to participate in the [LEADERSHIP ACADEMY]—a yearlong development program focusing on leadership, ethics, and professionalism. Through several career-focused workshop modules I developed my personal professionalism as well as strong communication, critical thinking, and problem solving skills. Furthermore, as an intramural flag football official I worked on a team with two other officials to manage fast-paced games and high pressure situations. I learned the importance of cooperation and effective communication among team members, and gained the confidence needed to interact with your constituents.

As a proven leader with relevant experience, I am excited to submit my name for consideration. If you would like to discuss my qualifications further, please contact me at [PHONE] or at [EMAIL]. I am available to work from May 11th to August 14th. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
