Sample cover letter for Full Time position at DMC

POSITION:

Automation Engineer Control Systems

Dear Sir/Madam,

With the utmost enthusiasm, I would like to express my interest in the Automation Engineer – Control Systems (Engineering Level 1) position at DMC. I am pursuing my Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Robotics and Controls at Northwestern University. I am attracted by the opportunity to learn and grow under experts in their fields at DMC and aspire to embark on an exciting career in developing software and technologies that revolutionize the world as we see it today.

Driven by my passion towards the automotive industry, I am actively involved in the design and development of an autonomous self-navigating toy car for a mechatronics competition co-organized by Ford Motors. My design incorporates interfacing an android device to a PIC32 microcontroller that carries out image analysis and executes motor control using a mobile application. Under autonomous driving, I have developed a computer vision project on lane detection implemented using Python and OpenCV.

As part of my on-going research at the Neuroscience and Robotics Laboratory, I am researching on the modelling of an algorithm capable of pose recognition and 6D high-speed motion tracking of objects travelling through a defined space using the Opti-Track Prime 17W system. I am also undertaking a project utilizing the Asus Kinect integrated to a drone system for 3D mapping centralizing on object detection, tracking and removal of dynamic bodies from the mapped point cloud. I am well versed in object recognition, motion planning and localization algorithms, which are essential to the research of novel autonomous technologies.

Following my undergraduate study in the U.K, I worked at a steel manufacturing plant under material testing and quality control. Whilst there, I had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with software such as FEA Ansys and SolidWorks. I hold industrial experience in Control Systems through my attachment at Mitsubishi Motors where I worked on vehicle stability control. In addition, I possess exceptional business management and communication skills demonstrated through my entrepreneurial efforts at my private auto imports business.

Outside my academics, I am part of a team working on an autonomous drone start-up where I continue to expand my knowledge on computer vision and machine learning algorithms integrated to autonomous flying and anomaly recognition for pipeline surveillance. We have recently been selected by the Farley Accelerator this program and are currently developing our prototype model.

The opportunity at DMC reflects my interests and perfectly maps to what I consider an exciting environment to build on my engineering acumen. I do strongly feel that my multi-disciplinary experience has availed to me a well-rounded outlook to real life engineering problems with a solution-focused approach applicable to the wide array of applications that DMC serves. I enjoy tackling challenges and am a highly motivated and ambitious individual, deeply passionate towards developing autonomous systems and technological solutions accessible to the wider market.

I do sincerely look forward to having the opportunity to speak with you further about how I can be an asset to your team. Thank you very much.

Yours Faithfully,
