Dear

1st paragraph: Tell the employer why you are writing name the position, field or general career area about which you are asking. Tell how you heard of the opening or organization.

2nd paragraph: Mention 1 or 2 of your qualifications that you believe would be of the greatest interest and match to their position and company. Explain what qualifies you for the position. Don’t repeat verbatim what is in your resume. Add to your qualifications. Why should they invite you in for an interview? This is the paragraph to elaborate on specific classes, project experiences, skills or volunteer experiences that would be of interest to them. Explain why you believe these relate to their position and uniquely qualify you for the position.

3rd paragraph: Close by making reference that your resume is attached / enclosed for their review. Request an opportunity to visit the employer, suggesting a possible date and time or state that you would like an opportunity to share further your qualifications in a personal interview/meeting. Indicate the best way to reach you and remember, you must be flexible to meet their calendar! Make sure your closing is specific and not vague and indicates how you will follow-up.
