Sample cover letter for Internship position at Human Rights Campaign

POSITION:

Communications Intern

GOT THE JOB? Yes

Throughout the adversity I endured in my childhood as a homosexual, the news was my escape. I found myself lost in the stories and curious about how they were shaped. As I grew older, I realized that communications professionals were behind those stories and my passion for news would later fueled my interest and appreciation for the field of public relations. When I discovered the Communications and Marketing Internship posting on Human Rights Campaign website, I had to apply. I believe my leadership, experience, support for the LGBT community and eagerness to learn will prove to be an asset to your organization.

Highly determined and conscientious, I understood the importance of becoming involved in my prospective career and community at an early age. I was determined to acquire an internship my freshman year of college in order to finally hone my insatiable curiosity, and the IHF Corp. served as my window of opportunity. As the youngest public relations and marketing intern for a $4.19 billion dollar company, I wrote and edited countless press releases that received national and regional coverage from FOX, NBC, ABC and CBS affiliates in addition to coverage from print and online publications. Constantly interacting with journalists in the media relations department, I developed a better understanding of how to disseminate information to journalists to cultivate better stories. I also enhanced my already adept writing skills, while adhering to AP Style guidelines and coordinated press events and presentations.

Currently, I am earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism at American University. I learned how to effectively research and produce precise, concise and compelling news content through my experience in advanced English classes and as a staff writer for The Signal newspaper. I also have developed a sharp eye for editing, organizational skills and attention to detail. I will utilize the skills I gained and am currently gaining in order to effectively serve and represent the Human Rights Campaign in the utmost way possible.

An articulate and charismatic public speaker, I have aspirations of one day becoming an influential communications professional and spokesperson for a LGBT organization. An internship at the Human Rights Campaign will allow me to not only further pursue my passion for communications but also allow me to give back to my community – the LGBT community. I am eager to gain valuable knowledge and hands on experience in the field of media communications, politics and LGBT advocacy, which is why I am very interested in your organization. Together we can promote a message of equality for LGBT Americans throughout the nation. An interview at your earliest convenience would be greatly appreciated. Enclosed is my resume, which will provide full details of my qualifications.

Kindest regards,
