Sample cover letter for Internship position at McKinsey

POSITION:

Consultant

Hiring Manager

McKinsey & Company (Malaysia)

Level 25 Menara 3 Petronas Persiaran

KLCC 50088 Kuala Lumpur Malaysia

Dear Hiring Manager:

After discovering the opportunities of interning with McKinsey from the company’s website, I am truly interested in gaining experience with this prestigious organization. As a third year student studying in a foreign country, I believe that I have the training and skills that are valuable to your Associate Internship Program as offered by your company.

As a student of Public Affairs Management of Indiana University Bloomington, my education is geared towards learning about three important sectors that affect Malaysia. These are government, private and non-profit sector. I have a deep interest in government, especially in public policy, and I believe learning about policy-making will help the other two sectors to grow. I have taken classes related to public policy, and I have a basic understanding of how policy is made. Currently, I am working together with a group of students in the Interdisciplinary Research Institute (IRIS) Malaysia in researching and discussing about Malaysia’s domestic and foreign policy. This is a student-based think tank with one of the goal is to affect policy-making by making small changes. So far, from this research group, I have produced an article about Malaysia’s policy during the colonial period. My understanding in public policy tied with the analytical skills that I developed is highly beneficial as a consultant in the company.

The philosophy of this company, which is to make change in society through management consulting, attracts my interest the most. I recognize the strong effort of McKinsey & Company to deal with economic growth without neglecting social responsibility. One of the examples is with the environmental sustainability project. I love to learn more about the program and I am also looking forward to share my insight on such issue. I would love to work with McKinsey because of the alignment of vision between the company and myself.

In short, I believe my educational training and my personal interest will be valuable for the company and McKinsey & Company. As a public affairs student, I believe in making change through consultancy. Thank you for your consideration reading this email, and I would love to hear more from you. You can reach me at +1812-327-6034.

Sincerely,

Amirul Faris
