Sample cover letter for Internship position at McKinsey

POSITION:

Summer Associate

I am writing to apply for a place on the 2016 BCG Summer Campaign. I am a second year Law student at University College London (UCL).

A programme with BCG greatly appeals to me because, upon researching the firm, a huge emphasis is placed on customisation to address client’s challenges. This is evidenced by the novel pricing strategy employed when working with an industrial goods manufacturer in the US. Reading financial strategist Drew Tannenbaum’s Q&A, it was of particular note to see a strong ethic to work in a team, not only with other BCG employees, but also the importance of involving the client and learning from different perspectives. The opportunity to be a part of a supportive and challenging environment, coupled with a desire to work in a constantly evolving industry has made a position in consulting a natural fit for me.

The problem-solving nature of the work on my Law course has given me the analytical and logical skills to succeed at BCG. The varied and challenging nature of a Law degree is focused on finding solutions to client’s concerns, so a position in management consultancy is the perfect platform to employ these skills. The combination of academic rigour and real-world applicability, coupled with my existing interest in the financial markets therefore makes a position with BCG an exciting prospect.

In addition to my academic experience, I am currently a member of both the UCL Football and Lacrosse teams, where I have honed my communication ability and teamwork skills. I have also worked with the charity Headway, where I had to specifically cater to client’s needs in order to construct methods for advancing their rehabilitation. These experiences, as well as my role as Head of House at school, have developed my aptitude to accommodate a wide range of clients and problems that need attending to, equipping me with the skills to fit in with and add value to the culture at BCG.

Finally, I have enjoyed spending time working on the practice cases on the BCG website, where it was clear to see the logical approach taken when resolving the relevant issues.
