Sample cover letter for Internship position at National Geographic

POSITION:

Arts Graphics Research Intern

To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing to you regarding the Arts/Graphic Research intern position that opened up recently. I came across the job description on Fox Careers, and was excited to find that my academic background allows me to meet the necessary requirements. I am seeking a challenging but rewarding internship for this summer and was immediately drawn to this exciting opportunity.

As a senior biology and fine arts student at the University of Virginia, I have acquired skills in graphic design, color theory, and illustration as well as academic writing and analysis of scientific and academic texts. Currently, I hold a 3.2 GPA and will be completing a supplementary certificate program from the UVA McIntire School of Commerce this spring. While in the College of Arts & Sciences I have focused my coursework in the areas of developmental biology for my science degree and printmaking for my arts degree.

It is my hope to combine my love of science and art in my future career path and consider National Geographic to be the ideal place to help me develop and focus my skills. Although I have never worked in information graphics specifically, I have excellent writing skills and am very comfortable doing my own research, creating original copy and producing digital images when necessary. Given my background in the arts I have found that presenting something visually can bring clarity and increase audience engagement in data/information that would otherwise be considered overly complex by the average person. Today, like never before, everyone has the opportunity to be more informed on global issues and trends that affect us all. I want to draw people into the important topics of today and help them get the most comprehension out of what they are reading or studying.

I would be delighted to have the opportunity to personally interview with your department. Please accept the attached resume and feel free to contact me at your earliest convenience. I appreciate your time and consideration of my application.
