Sample cover letter for Internship position at Nomura

POSITION:

Summer intern

Nomura Covering Letter

I am currently a student of 2nd year mathematics and economics at LSE. I was introduced to an analyst at Nomura working in the IBD EMEA division. The experience he recounted sparked my curiosity, but it was ignited when I started conducting my own research. They spoke of the integrity of the firm’s culture and the friendly nature of the employees. A position on your summer internship in the IBD Global Finance division would expose me to the insight I need to experience the industry and especially Nomura’s unique praxis.

The global transaction record of Nomura is celebrated the world over, but this is not the only reason I want to work for your bank. The ethos of professional integrity I find particularly appealing. The notable expansion of the company’s franchises over decades I see to be largely resultant of this powerful Japanese ethos. This same holistic approach to business strategy I view as a compelling predictor of the company’s bright future. The recent plans and involvement with the colossal Japan Post IPO also exemplifies the bank’s illustrious nature.

My course has taught me much that I think would make me an asset to Nomura. The mathematical nature of it keeps my problem-solving skills sharp and the workload ensures that I manage my time efficiently. The microeconomics module I’m studying seems especially relevant to investment banking- the game theory aspect of it fascinates me. The theory analyses merger and acquisition strategies directly as an example of a game. Principles of Econometrics gives me an in-depth understanding of data.

While I value my academic profile, I would also like to convey other ways I can be a credit to Nomura. One achievement which I think shows my other qualities my volunteering work. The 6-Week trip to Venezuela gave me invaluable team-work and leadership experience and was certainly the biggest challenge I’ve faced. Partly because I was the best Spanish speaker in our team, I put myself forward for the largest leadership responsibilities. For example, having to source building materials from local Venezuelans taught me innumerable lessons about cultural adaptation and professional integrity. I think that because I understood the importance of these values, this was why I achieved a 35% reduction in our planned expenditure. Navigating this dangerous terrain certainly gave me experience in a highly-pressurised environment. I’ve been lucky enough to have travelled extensively throughout my life- this equips me with the experience to deal with colleagues and clients from a varied number of cultures and in a varied number of countries.

I’m confident that if I get the chance to be interviewed, it will be worth your time.

Yours faithfully,

xx
