Sample cover letter for Full Time position at Oppenheimer

POSITION:

Investment Banking Analyst

Dear Sir or Madam,

My name is Huston and I am currently a senior studying Biology at Johns Hopkins University. I discovered Oppenheimer on the Johns Hopkins Career Center website and was impressed with what I learned of the success your Investment Banking Division has had after the acquisition of CIBC. I am interested in pursuing an Investment Banking Analyst position at your firm, and have enclosed my resume and background information below.

My path to investment banking has been unorthodox. Until this school year, I had been preparing myself to be successful as a medical school applicant. Though I have no prior experience in finance or business, I have acquired many of the skills necessary to excel as an Investment Banking Analyst while I pursued medicine. During my time as a research assistant at the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research, and at the Carnegie Institute of Washington, I learned to be highly analytical and hypothesis-driven. Since my decision to change career paths, I also joined an early-stage startup company called the Elsayyad Medical Group, and have used what I have been feverishly studying about finance and business to help steer the company in the right direction.

Despite my lack of background in finance, I do believe that I am a particularly good fit for the Investment Banking Analyst position at your firm. I’ve risked everything by changing my path away from medicine and now it’s sink or swim. I’ve got everything to prove, but based on Oppenheimer’s track record of success, I believe that there I could not only swim, but win gold medals.

A copy of my resume is enclosed for your reference. I would very much appreciate an opportunity to discuss my qualifications with you and learn more about Oppenheimer. I can be reached by telephone at 336-971-2534 or via email at hlrcollins@jhu.edu. I am grateful your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
