Sample cover letter for Internship position at Red Hen Press

POSITION:

Editorial Internship

Dear XXX:

I am applying for the Editorial Internship, with the Marketing & Publicity Internship as a second choice, which I learned about through the Hameetman Career Center at Occidental College. I am excited for the opportunity to work with Red Hen Press because of your work with promoting literacy in local schools. This continues to be a passion of mine as one of my first experiences was working with kindergarteners in this area, and I look forward to using the combination of my academics and experiences in one of these positions.

Attending a creative writing workshop seven years ago first introduced me to my love of words and I have since developed a passion for making my own and other works better. This passion followed me as I participated in a course called Capstone Project my senior year of high school, where I had to set my own deadlines, find a mentor and produce a product of my choosing. I wrote and edited a 25,000-word fantasy novella. This experience led me to be self-sufficient and spurred me to pursue an internship with Janus Education.

One of my jobs at Janus Education was to edit stories written by children. I was blown away by their creativity and felt a strong relationship with them as the middleman working on their drafts. With over a hundred stories to edit in two months, I learned to be efficient in turning drafts into polished products. Furthermore, the small office space meant sitting next to a designer and a PR manager simultaneously, which led me to have a deeper understanding of how all components intertwine and effect one another in the office. With Red Hen Press, I hope to gain a more in depth understanding of the publishing industry while building relationships with authors who have something to say.

This summer, I also attended weekly training with the Singapore Book Publisher’s Association and put together a book proposal with a marketing and financial plan. I collaborated with partners to turn a popular American children’s book into a book catered to a Singaporean audience. My ability to work in a team to finish a full product is a skill I can bring to Red Hen Press.

I have provided my resume for further evidence of my qualifications. I am confident in my abilities to turn a draft into a product, I work well under pressure, and I’m always looking to learn new things. Thank you for your time, and I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

XXX
