POSITION:

Management Trainee

GOT THE JOB? Yes

Working at Uber, a young start up company, the need to take ownership of what I do is greater than anywhere else. When the growth line trends down, targets are given and new projects need to be quickly planned and executed. 2 months into working here, growth was unexpectedly low due to strong competition in the market and my team was challenged with new initiatives to enhance the growth performance. Scheming through our historical data, I saw that the number of ride request of customers from non-central area was increasingly high (26% of all bookings in October compared to just under 15% in the previous month) but the booking success rate remained low at just under 40%. Realising that we had not strongly approached the drivers based in these areas, I went to my direct supervisor and proposed the idea of hosting onboarding sessions in these non-central areas to create easy access for these drivers. Seeing the rationale through my analysis, he backed me in the team meeting and let me lead the project which was the first project that I was directly in charge while working here. Until January, my project has successfully brought in 23% of overall driver supply growth since August.

During my first undergraduate year, I was elected as the president of Vietnamese Society at City University. The society was young and there were many things to be done at the time to connect the members and make it a strong society as a foundation for the future committee generations. Understanding our responsibilities, I and the committee team have organised a wide range of events which serve many different purposes. Particularly, there was one event that we were especially proud of and it is still being organised until today by the next committee generations. At the time, the number of Vietnamese students studying abroad in the UK were increasingly high and many of them started to think about their career very soon. Realising the needs of Vietnamese students to have professional career guidance and support, I started the idea and led the committee team to organise ‘Prospects’, the first career workshop and networking event aiming at connecting current students with Vietnamese professionals who were working in top firms across the UK. We have worked together to establish a feasible plan for the event, then deliver a team speech on our short-term and long-term aim as well as how the event should be implemented to a group of ten professionals in various fields. My team and I, keeping our mind on the goal to offer valuable support to the Vietnamese student community, have dedicated the effort needed into making the event happen. The event attracted high media attention from my country and has since become one of the society’s signature annual events attracting on yearly average of 150 attendants.
