Sample cover letter for Full Time position at comsol

POSITION:

applications engineer

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am excited to apply for the position of Applications Engineer: Electromagnetics (REF-921) at COMSOL, Inc. as advertised on your company’s website. In December 2015 I graduated from Michigan Technological University with a Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering with a focus on computational electromagnetics, exploring plasmonics enhanced hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) photovoltaics cell. I have used COMSOL Multiphysics quite extensively in my research for about five years. My deep understanding within the field of computational electromagnetics and my intensive experience in using this software inspired me to investigate a role I could play in bringing more value and development to COMSOL, Inc.

As a research assistant at Michigan Tech, I worked on my dissertation project involving plasmonics enhanced a-Si:H solar cells to improve optical conversion efficiency using nanostructured array of plasmonic resonators. Daily, for hours on end, I was modeling and simulating the nanostructured plasmonic resonators design in COMSOL Multiphysics and was able to improve the optical absorption efficiency by 19% in the active absorbing layer, which resulted in a published journal paper. For the same project I also developed differential evolution and genetic algorithms in order to optimize plasmonic solar cell parameters using LiveLink for MATLAB.

Other COMSOL Multiphysics related PhD projects of mine included conversion of Ohmic loss dominated metamaterial absorbers into near-perfect photovoltaic absorbers with the advantage of harvesting the full potential of light management offered by the metamaterial absorbers. This work was greatly appreciated within the metamaterials community and was published in the Nature Scientific reports, which has 29 citations by now.

I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of finding a way to improve the conversion efficiency of a solar cell while maintaining the cost in order to someday increase the deployment of solar panels. In my doctoral program, the usage of COMSOL Multiphysics was extended to study and simulate antennas, meta-materials, meta-surfaces, perfect absorbers and plasmonic waveguides.

While working on my projects, I have acquired expertise in using RF and wave-optics modules as well as gained valuable experience in using LiveLink for MATLAB, optimization, AC/DC, MEMS and semiconductor modules. I am also quite accomplished in C/ C++ and Java programming. I strongly believe that my comprehensive experience and knowledge of using COMSOL Multiphysics and associated modules as well as programming skills will allow me to begin contributing immediately and facilitate developing applications in COMSOL Multiphysics and further improving the software.

During my doctoral program, I also served as a Project Mentor for undergraduate and graduate level photonics classes for three consecutive semesters, weekly engaging with a diverse group of students and providing them with academic support and project feedback in COMSOL Multiphysics. Furthermore, I have gained strong project and time management skills through collaboratively organizing inter-group meetings, training modules for group members and inter-department faculty seminars. This has helped me to develop strong communication skills. Interactions with faculty members, students and fellow colleagues inspired me to improve my interpersonal skills. Being a team player, I strongly believe in my efforts to contribute, support and thrive in the creative and collaborative environment of COMSOL, Inc.

I have attached my resume for your review and ask for the opportunity to interview with you at your earliest convenience. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Thanking You
