Lazard is the best independent investment bank amongst its competitors and has been awarded such by Euromoney for the last 2 years. Lazard is at the forefront in asset management and global financial advisory and is particularly renowned for M&A advisory. In 2014, Lazard ranked seventh in the M&A advisory league table based on deal volume, ahead of many budge bracket banks. This is an area in cooperate finance I am especially interested in and Lazard is the only independent firm that truly challenges the big universal banks in the fee and volume league tables in M&A. Whilst being an independent firm, Lazard has a global reach on par with the universal banks with offices in 43 cities and clients in over 70 countries, but with the intimacy of a relatively small firm with a greater opportunity for professional development. From reading employee profiles, I also find the firms collaborative and colligate working atmosphere highly appealing and I enjoy working in small, close-knit teams with greater opportunity for contribution. I was also attracted by the firm’s commitment to provide excellent client service built on enduring relationships of integrity and professionalism. During my work experience as an assistant pharmacist I communicated closely with co-workers and managers to handle customer queries, manage inventory and deliver prescriptions, building meaningful relationships based on trust with colleagues and customers alike. Over the years, I have developed analytical and problem solving skills, vital for all roles within investment banking by passionately studying mathematics and solving problems, not only at GCSE and A-level, but also in-depth outside the curriculum when preparing for mathematics society and for the UK senior maths challenge. I have developed a growing interest in the financial markets and corporate finance, regularly attending LSE finance related events and networking with alumni, along with keeping up to date on financial issues. Currently I am closely following the interest rates affair. This insight programme is an excellent opportunity to find out what investment bankers at Lazard do on a day-to-day basis and experience the firm’s culture. I also look forward to networking with bankers with all levels of experience and being part of a real deal team, gaining practical experience of the type of work you would complete as an analyst. Next summer I would love to work as an intern for Lazard.
