Sample cover letter for Internship position at nomura

POSITION:

intern

SOP: Nomura (Finance)

I am currently a final year undergraduate pursuing a four year Bachelor of Technology program in Chemical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. I am writing this to apply for the post of Risk Analyst in the firm.

After gaining additional perspective through the company’s website, I am convinced that Nomura offers the best platform for a successful career in finance. I find the opportunities the firm gives its employees to work closely with front end quantitative research teams and product control really appealing. A career in finance has very steep learning curve. It covers so many areas from developing risk models to providing assistance in M&A, thus giving you a very wide exposure. The job really needs you to be in sync with what is happening in the world as this is one field that so correlates to the economy. It requires you to be creative, accurate and having an eye for details, thus making it quite challenging. Moreover working in a firm like yours whose brand value is built on their commitment to deliver unique value to clients by Connecting Markets East and West, would give me an immense learning exposure and would be a great step in building my own career since it’s both challenging as well as intellectually rewarding.

My undergraduate education at IIT Bombay till now has not only given me a wide variety of skills but has also helped me understand my fields of interest and my academic strengths and weaknesses. I have worked in a fair amount of projects over the last three years, most important of which was Project BioSynth. I was one of the few managers of this project which mentored a team of around 15 juniors in production and selling of Biodiesel. I have always been excited by the prospects of tackling real world problems and have developed a knack for Mathematics, particularly Probability and Statistics as well as for solving logic puzzles. I have worked in a start-up, 64 Squares where I designed a recommendation engine for a leading match making service provider in India. This internship was a huge learning experience for me both in terms of technical and entrepreneurship abilities. Over the past summer, I worked as a Research Intern developing fluid low models (very much similar to various financial models) at SABIC. This was again a fantastic experience as I for the first time got a feel of corporate culture: working and interacting with company officials, meeting deadlines and reaching to the apex of problem, no matter what. Moreover, I have done projects where I had to develop interaction models by performing simulations using stochastic approach of Monte Carlo. They all were challenging experiences for me as they brought out my capabilities to maximum.

Apart from being fond of the academic curriculum, I am really passionate about Cricket and Dancing as well. I have been Class representative of my batch, Coordinator of various festivals organized and an active member of my hostel cultural and sport teams. These interests of mine have cultivated strong leadership and “being a team player” qualities in me. All these have made me realize that though my core engineering appeal to me, my strengths and passion lie in working as a team and delivering results. This passion, combined with my strong corporate experience in the last year and my very strong analytical and quantitative abilities, make me a strong fit for your firm.

I always follow the motto: “Stay Raw”. I am really passionate about anything new that comes my way and try my best to achieve something out of it. I believe I have the necessary skills, academic achievement, practical experience, and passion required that would help me succeed in the firm's exciting and motivated environment and make me a valuable asset. In addition interacting with various people, be it be colleagues or company officials, have helped me in gaining good interpersonal and communication skills. With my penchant for producing tangible results and my enthusiasm for tackling tough issues, I am confident that I can make significant contributions to the firm.

Sincerely
