Sample cover letter for Full Time position at spacex

POSITION:

Rocket Engineer

Dear Selection Committee,

I am actively seeking an full time position that is both challenging, exciting, and hands-on which supports the US space program. Currently, I am in the US Army Reserve and have completed my Basic and Advanced Individual Training (AIT). Through my career search on the SpaceX website, I came across the position of Test Operations Engineer.

I have a very strong passion for spaceflight operations and human spaceflight endeavors.I am very interested in the engineering that goes behind launching a rocket for both cargo and crew applications. I have been following the ongoing success of SpaceX’s reusable Falcon 9 and Dragon capsule’s cargo resupply missions to the International Space Station, and I have been looking forward to the company’s future involvement in commercial crew operations and deep space exploration.

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Physics with minor in Mathematics. Despite my science major I have always worked on hands on applied physics laboratories and projects. On PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scanner project we started with a vision of making a more accurate, cost effective, and efficient operating concept than what currently exists. We formulated ideas to better locate the reaction using time and distance analysis. Similarly in my quantum optics lab, we tested reflection and transmission of light through new shapes of integrating cavities made with different materials and compared the data. Engineering to me is the application of science where we take a system and create it or make it better. I believe that I have skills and requirements for this position.

I have a lot of experience performing tests, experiments and reporting on them. I joined army as a Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear Specialist. I received training on handling hazardous materials while most importantly enforcing safety of myself and others. Working in group has always been a fun and learning experience but joining army taught me effective communicating skills while absorbing the mentality of a “one team, one fight”.

I believe in being very passionate and having a strong work ethic in order to be successful. I fully understand that a learning curve may be involved in understanding certain fundamentals for a test operations engineer, but I look at this challenge as an opportunity to be knowledge hungry as I learn and work alongside engineers who may already have years of experience. Along with my resume and cover letter, I submitted some of my unique works that demonstrates my expertise and excellence. I look forward to the chance at this opportunity to work for SpaceX and demonstrate my abilities and offer my services in support of the space program.
