POSITION:

communications officer

Drawing my inspiration from the belief that the greatest part of our existence enfold in service of humanity, I hereby wish to express my interest in the Advocacy and Comm. Officer within the United Nations Volunteers program. With its outstanding reputation, UNV has long been a dream place for me to work. I feel that my combination of competencies, experience in management and communications and my passion for humanitarian work make me the right fit for this position.

Since I left for a one-year Exchange program to the USA, I started believing in the importance of volunteering. I enrolled as a Volunteer with The Peace Lutheran Church in Texas and loved the way it feels to be able to give without expecting anything in return. I gained valuable experience in planning many events within the Church, such as Father’s Dance Day and Church Painting Day. Within the same program, I also had the chance to watch over children with Cancer at a hospital once a week by playing with them and teaching them new things. As a bilingual in French in high school, I volunteered as a French Teacher Assistant to be able to help the students have a better proficiency and pronunciation of the language. Spending over 150 hours volunteering abroad has given me knowledge and perspective in humanitarian situations, and an understanding of the importance of sustainable community development programs.

My solid experience as a Communications Director in RotarAct Club has allowed me to gain strong leadership and analytical skills that can be effectively used by your organization ; I have amassed a broad knowledge in managing internal communication for members, providing leadership and coordination for all communication activities of the NGOs. I was also accountable for all communication activities including liaison activities with organizations with similar interests locally and internationally.

Furthermore, as a Team Leader in AIESEC, I have attained substantive skills in organizing and facilitating various training sessions and workshops, providing necessary support to project team and partners, facilitating participatory planning and budgeting, project database management, report writing/documentation and coordinating, linking and leading collaborations with various like-minded organizations and other stakeholders.

Having completed a Bachelor in Management Science (Marketing), I have a strong academic grounding in management, marketing and communication and succeeded in merging my passion for altruistic activities with my academic background when I went to work as a Guest Relations Officer in a hotel in New Delhi. Being in that part of the world has inspired me to surround myself with those who are committed to human rights and environmental change. Without a doubt, UNV offers that experience and atmosphere.

Through my work, volunteering, and travel experience, I have honed my interpersonal, organizational and networking skills. I am a self-directed team player who has careful attention to detail and the ability to think outside of the box. I am thrilled about the possibility of deploying my skills, positive attitude, and strong work ethic in the service of the UNV Communications Team and wider Sri Lankan community.

Thank you for considering my application. I can be reached at your convenience via phone or email. I look forward to hearing from you.
