More and more consumers are passionate about sustainability and demonstrate this in their lifestyle habits and their spending.  In fact, more than 70% of Millennials are willing to pay more for products that offer a positive social or environmental impact. Although sustainability is multifaceted, one key component that both individuals and companies can strive for is reducing waste.

As a food store, waste elimination is a huge goal for us and one that is increasingly relevant.  We want to know what people are already doing at home to live more sustainably and cut down on waste, especially when it comes to food products.  For example, you might repurpose packaging or think of clever ways to use food parts that would otherwise be thrown away (like making a relish out of kale stems, using apple cores to make tea, or creating a spice packet that gives you everything you need to pickle vegetables at home instead of throwing vegetables away).  Then, we want to hear your new ideas that we can implement through new products or services in a grocery store to reduce waste!

We are interested in new ideas that will help us eliminate waste in our food stores as well as in your home.  Specifically, answer the following:

  1. What sorts of things are you doing at home to cut down on food waste?  If it applies to you, how do you reuse or repurpose packaging or the food itself?
  2. At-home ideas: What product ideas do you have that would help eliminate or reduce waste at home?
  3. In-store ideas: What is your solution that a food store could implement to eliminate waste?  This might be a new food product, new packaging, or an off-the-wall solution!  Ideally, your solution is something that would be sold in the store.
    • Consider this example solution: a pickling kit that has all the ingredients someone would need for pickling.  The kit itself reduces packaging waste and pickling can reduce food waste.
